Digital Imaging Rule Poster Project
Guiding Question
How might I use colors, images, and text to help me show meaning through a design? Project Description: Students will be creating two advertisement designs that integrate type, color, shapes, lines, and images (photography or graphics). These designs will be used to communicate a specific message to the viewer that should prompt the viewer to action. The steps to complete this project are detailed below. Poster Project Requirements: 1. Poster Planning – Students will complete the planning phase of the personal poster project that is within the remainder of this packet. Completing this will provide the student with a well thought out design prior to creating the design within Photoshop. The poster planning must be completed prior to starting the poster within Photoshop. (See planning page on back.) 2. Personal Poster – Students will choose a rule from school or in their community that they would like to promote or change. This will become the idea behind the personal poster they will create. Students will then use found or created images, text (type), color and composition within a Photoshop document to create an advertisement poster that portrays their idea. The personal poster must include the following: text (type), a chosen color scheme, imagery (photography or created graphics), 7.5 Inches by 10 Inches, 300 resolution, and created in Photoshop. As with all art project in high school, the advertisement must be appropriate for school. |

Action
The purpose of advertisements is to cause someone viewing them to have some sort of action. This action could be many different things: buying a product, changing the way they view a brand, or even promoting an idea or person are just a few actions advertisers try to create.
Color
Another key part to creating a successful advertisement is using a color scheme that directly relates to the desired action from the viewer. Brands use color schemes that have been used consistently throughout their advertisements so that viewers will automatically know what the advertisement is promoting. Some advertisements use colors as a way to create a mood within the viewer that matches the desired action.
Type
Designers make the message behind their advertisements clear by adding type and a tagline to their advertisements. The imagery, colors, and type / tagline should be consistent in the message they are communicating. Coming up with the right type / tagline to use for an advertisement can be very difficult, this is why designers brainstorm many ideas and then choose the very best type and tagline from their final advertisement.
Composition
Designers use composition as a way to draw attention to certain areas within their advertisements. The viewer will first notice what is most important and then will be prompted through composition to notice other parts of the advertisement.
